We said our goodbyes and headed back to my car. I texted Jack an update but failed to mention tonight’s rendezvous; Constable Sutton must have guessed it.

‘You didn’t let Inspector Monroe know about the club?’

‘No point giving him a heart attack. We only need to find Ruby’s contact.’

‘You don’t want to risk losing them.’

‘I’ll put the fear of God into them, don’t you worry, Sarah.’

She appeared unconvinced and checked her phone.

‘We’ve got time for clothes shopping.’

I shook my head. ‘No. I must go home and check on my daughter. I’ll wear my own gear.’

‘You know what Ruby said. Even with the app, you might not get in if you’re wearing the wrong outfit.’

‘I don’t see how I’ve much choice.’

‘You can borrow something of mine, ma’am.’

I turned to Sutton. She was ten years younger than me, but we had similar physiques. What was there to lose?

‘Make sure it’s nothing outrageous.’

‘I promise it’ll be fine.’

I had my doubts. ‘You’ll come with me while I check on my daughter. Then we’ll go to yours before heading to the club.’

I wasn’t sure what filled me with more trepidation: wearing some of Sutton’s BDSM clothes or having a conversation with Abbey. Or the prospect of finding a message on my answering machine from my father.

It was seven o’clock when we got to the house. I left Sutton in the living room and headed upstairs for Abbey. She wasn’t home, and a phone call only reached her answerphone. I sent a text and waited. I grabbed two bottles of Desperado from the fridge and handed Sarah one; then I slumped into the sofa and offered a toast to her.

‘I hope you like tequila.’

‘Who doesn’t?’ She lifted the alcohol towards her face.

I took a large drink. ‘How old are you, Sarah?’

‘I’m twenty-five.’

She looked younger and made me feel older.

‘Do you remember being a teenager?’

‘I was a quiet kid. Kept my head down at school, got good grades, passed all my exams, and then went to university. My parents were happy I stayed out of trouble. What about you?’

How much personal information did you tell a junior officer, even if you were drinking alcohol in your house and would soon visit a bondage club? Not a lot.

‘About the same as you. It’s my daughter Abbey I’m concerned about.’

‘She’s fourteen?’

‘Yes. She’s had some tough situations this past year. Abbey appeared over them, but I think I’m seeing a delayed reaction now.’

Sarah placed the bottle on the table.

‘Perhaps, or maybe it’s a teenage thing.’

I finished my drink, wanted another one, but I knew it wasn’t a good idea. There was a long night ahead of us. And as if by magic, I received a text from Abbey.

I’m staying at Francine’s tonight.

At least she didn’t call her Ladybird. I got off the sofa and resisted the urge to call Francine’s mother. Not trusting Abbey now would only make things worse.

‘I hope you’re right. Finish your drink, and we’ll get a taxi to your place. Where do you live?’

‘In Barking.’

I held the phone, the taxi app on the screen.
